This document Barney sent me is critical to this research.

Sorry to jump in so quickly. But I think this image relinked below may be the unknown 16-size, "16-jewelled Gruen special" movement mentioned in the catalog as # S-325. I've looked at this image hundreds of times, but just noticing now in your post...

Not # 56. The screws for the chatons are different locations, and there are 3 on the center wheel. The middle bridg is slightly different.

No cap on the pallet--should be visible. Chatoned jewel on escape wheel looks identical to the other train jewels--arbor clearly shown (not capped imo). And no grade # stamped.

Compare it with these two other live examples, including one that's stamped for 21 jewels. Much smaller jewel on escape bridge (arbor below not visible), chatoned pallet, etc... And different middle bridge!

Glad you did hop in!

"and I can use the help."

Super appreciate your observation and feedback.
You know how it works, sometimes to get to the answers you need ya have to brute force it, hack your way through it, be willing to be wrong, refine later, deconstruct to build up, be skeptical af, accept knowledge, show everyone how Gruen sausage is made. ;)
So far we have caliber 52 (Extra Precision), no.56, and an unknown 16s, 16 jewels "Gruen special" movement.

*Although I must point out 52 and 56 are listed Canadian "railroad" quality, the Gruen Special is not listed as "railroad" but the cutaway states that movement is railroad, probably why I went with 52.

this is the fly in my ointment, too! As you can probly tell from my rather wordy post, edited umpteen times, I'm also still trying to fit this together/put my head back together. Like, how is this middle bridge a hybrid of #4 & #1 in the Gruen Swiss filing??

Right? I know. It's totally figure it out as you go. We can set that aside for a moment.
Despite the questions from the docs about the Gruen special, we still have a 52 (Extra Precision) sn 136320 and a 56, sn 127543.

Which year is this Eaton catalog?

Hey thesnark, good to see you in this thread and great question. Sure let's cover the documents.

First, date I have for the 7 movements doc is 4/29/1908.

Now, the date for Eatons, it's right there at the top of the page my friend... and believe it or not it's "Spring & Summer Catalogue (No. 62) 1904".

About 4 years before the 7 movements (Nr.1 to Nr. 7) were protected!

Unfortunately, this Eaton's catalog is not available online any longer :( so I can't share a link.

Luckily, I saved a copy and actually thesnark, back in December of last year I shared in an email with you, your own copies too! :)

Some helpful data from ads I'll mention to help get you oriented quickly, like "Nr.2" from 12/31/1905 and ad with "Nr.5" sn 128462 from 2/1/1905, among others.

Let's see if we can take a small step forward tonight by identifying a movement without it having the caliber stamp!

Now, I believe this Madretsch OF movement, DGS, Extra, Gruen, sn 134829 (Dial: Gruen, Precision, Extra) 16s is an earlier version Extra caliber 52.

Compare to 136320:

Yes! Finally!

Listen, I'm getting hung up on a discrepancy I came across concerning "Nr. 4". And imo significant enough to mention as the point of this thread is to figure out these important details.
Nr. 4 previously identified as caliber 45.

20231019_164911.jpg

But the size was also previously identified as 13 ligne. Indeed material catalogs 1939, 1945, 1948, and 1953 calibre 45 is listed as 13 ligne.

But in 1926 supplement caliber 45 is listed as "Twelve Ligne" .

20231018_171430.jpg

Which is it? 12 or 13? Maybe we can solve this once and for all, anyone have a loose 45?!
