Pre-1900 Advertisements

Postby Fred » Mon 23. Oct 2023, 22:42

I’m open to feedback on usefulness of this thread, because there weren’t Gruen national ad campaigns. But there are a few that might merit mention, just to tie them to an era.

Not running ads? Maybe you’ll get lucky, and a competitor will advertise for you! Hamilton is very proud only 1 in 4 of their railroad watches have been condemned, but there’s one watch with a spotless record…

And a well known jeweler ad, for some eye candy. Since regular production models began with 62000, this should be the 24th made (there was no 62,006, but there were two 62009 movements).

My feedback is in the its useful camp. It's basically a pre 1900 jeweler advertisement thread.

Different sn than one you're showing, it's either 62747 or 62717.

Wow. That’s the first ad I’ve seen with movement only pricing across the range. $90 in 1890s? That’s at least $3000 in today’s USD.

Thanks for the feedback, too. Yes, jeweler ads, so might see some duplication across threads. Guess we can let it live, unless others have a strong opinion to the contrary.

See?! I messed your thread up already. Laughing at myself here, I posted bc of the serial, not even looking at dates in my delirium, 1902, 1904. Source embedded in attachment. My mind has a mind of its own? Oh I've been on autopilot all week with no end in sight.
I illustrated your point perfectly about overlap! Lol. Well, I was going to suggest we simply keep this for pre 1900 and the other jeweler ad thread for post 1900 but yup, hard to delineate when the subject is these movements.
Forgive me.

Nothing to forgive! I missed the date in file (reading from the phone, not easy to see), but valuable info to this thread imo

This link shows 62717 in play already in a DGS pamphlet from 1900.

A different version with sn 62023 but with a guarantee certificate for a sn 62208. 1895.
